About our event

The S.W.A.G. (Social Worker Appreciation of Greatness) Awards Ceremony was born out of Vitamin C Healing, LLC's online celebration of historical African American social workers during Black History Month and recognition of local social workers during National Social Work Month. Vitamin C Healing, a service-oriented organization, focuses on enhancing the emotional wellness of helping professionals, mental health leaders, and entrepreneurs struggling with self-care, work-life balance, compassion fatigue, and burnout through corporate workshops and consultations. The organization reached out to community leaders in healthcare, education, non-profit, and social services to nominate local social workers who have positively impacted and promoted healing within Greater Pittsburgh communities. Through social media, we were able to spotlight 19 social workers in the area, nominated by their peers for their selflessness, integrity, compassion, competence, and dedication to the social work field. In March 2019, we hosted a small, informal gathering to honor these social workers with certificates of appreciation.

The mission of the annual SWAG Awards Ceremony is to celebrate the often underappreciated work of social workers who exemplify servant leadership and are committed to advocacy, social justice, generational healing, and community empowerment.

The inaugural SWAG Awards Ceremony, originally planned for March 2020, was canceled due to the pandemic. However, our team adapted by hosting an online celebration in 2021 to ensure the 21 honorees had a meaningful experience as close to an in-person event as possible. Since then, the SWAG Awards have celebrated the "heart work" of more than 50 social workers, in front of over 200 guests, including helping professionals, community organizers, small business owners, and corporate executives. This year marks the 5th anniversary of the SWAG Awards, which take place every March during National Social Work Month, organized by a dedicated committee.

The 5th Annual S.W.A.G. Awards Ceremony will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the Sheraton Station Square in Pittsburgh, PA.

I'm Sharise Nance, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Trauma Specialist and also the co-owner and founder of HandinHand Counseling Services, LLC, a private practice born from a deep understanding of the mental health disparities faced by Black communities and a firsthand experience with pay inequities that mental health therapists and social workers often encounter. My partner and I established this practice with a commitment to provide equitable, culturally competent, and compassionate mental health services. With nearly 25 years of experience in social work and mental health, I have dedicated my career to helping individuals, couples, and families move from a state of energy depletion, hopelessness, panic, guilt, and overwhelm to a place of peace, joy, clarity, and satisfaction.

I also dedicate my efforts to running Vitamin C Healing, LLC, an organization focused on helping companies prevent Leadership Burnout and Compassion Fatigue. Using a trauma-sensitive and systems-based approach, Vitamin C Healing creates a supportive work culture that prioritizes work-life balance and integration. Known as the "Compassion Fatigue Lady" and "Compassion Stress Coach," I have become one of the pioneers of Compassion Fatigue work in Western Pennsylvania, bringing expertise, empathy, and innovative strategies to support the wellbeing of helping professionals, mental health leaders, and organizations.

My journey has not been without its challenges. Having experienced compassion fatigue and burnout myself, I recognized the critical need to support those in our field—especially social workers who are often undervalued and underpaid. This realization led to the creation of the SWAG (Social Worker Appreciation of Greatness) Awards, a platform that celebrates the "heart work" of social workers who go above and beyond to serve their communities. The SWAG Awards were born from a recognition of the glaring absence of ceremonies that honor the tireless efforts of social workers who are at the forefront of advocating for children, families, and entire communities.

Since its inception, the SWAG Awards have grown in reputation and impact, earning the trust and support of repeat sponsors. Our commitment to integrity and transparency is reflected in our awardee selection process, which is managed by a dedicated SWAG committee. We use a rigorous point system to ensure that the social workers honored have demonstrated exceptional dedication to the core values of social work—human relationships, dignity and worth, competence, integrity, social justice, and service. Seven social workers are selected annually, along with up to three specialty awards, ensuring that those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty receive the recognition they truly deserve.

Sponsors should trust me because my passion for this work is deeply rooted in personal experience and professional dedication. I have built a track record of supporting and uplifting the social work community through my own practice and through initiatives like the SWAG Awards. I understand the struggles that social workers face because I have lived them. My work is driven by a genuine desire to create positive change and to build platforms that highlight and celebrate those who make a difference.

By partnering with me and the SWAG Awards, sponsors are aligning with someone who not only understands the challenges within the field but is also actively working to address them. They can trust that their support will be used with integrity, purpose, and a commitment to making a tangible impact on the lives of social workers and the communities they serve.
